ANTIQUE Ca 1770s WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA, BEDFORD COUNTY POWDER-HORN WITH CARVED NATIVE AMERICAN INDIAN MARKINGS/CARVINGS DENOTING , “HAPPINESS” SYMBOLISM.
THERE ARE 4 SUCH MARKINGS ON THE WOOD AROUND THE OLD, ORIGINAL FORGED IRON NAIL (PHOTOS OF EACH CARVING).
I HAVE SEEN SIMILAR HALLMARKS ON NATIVE ITEMS, USUALLY ONLY IN MUSEUMS BECAUSE THIS DATES BACK TO THE 1700s, I do not know the tribal affiliation, but the universal Native American symbol for “happiness” is the sun. I have photographed each of the 4 carvings on the plug (PHOTOS).
GREAT ORIGINAL OCHRE PAINTED PATINA ON THE LARGE WOOD PLUG WITH UNDENIABLE MINERAL DEPOSITS ON THE FASTENING TACKS AND SUSPENSION PIN.
GREAT CARVED SPOUT WITH ORIGINAL WOOD STOPPER. MEASURES APPROX. 15 INCHES LONG.
THIS STYLE IS RARE. THESE RARE EXAMPLES ARE USUALLY ONLY IN MUSEUMS.
