An original July 24, 1777 Connecticut manuscript pay order for the loss of clothing, presumably for the use of the Army, to be paid to JOSEPH WHIPPLE, a wealthy Portsmouth, New Hampshire, patriot and merchant, signed by Oliver Ellsworth and John Chenward of the Committee of Supply. Also signed on reverse for payment received by Whipple. Needs research.... OLIVER ELLSWORTH [1745-1807] was a delegate to the Continental Congress at the end of the Revolutionary War, and a delegate to the Philadelphia Convention of 1787, where he helped substantially to draft the new United States Constitution, but left before signing the document. He is considered a true "Founding Father".
