*Please be aware that this photo is unlike newer computer digital prints because the original was shot on older grainy black and white film and printed from a copy negative and when enlarged will look grainier and not quite as sharp as the large thumbnail in this listing. You can see small blemishes and dust marks on the larger print. It has the unique look of a silver halide gelatin photo, and is still a very nice historic and artistic print.
Note: This is not the same photo someone else is selling. Apparently there
are 5-6

of this Hawaiian surfer.

It would make a great birthday or holiday gift for someone who likes surfing, Waikiki, or historic  images of Hawaii.
They are popular reasonably priced decorations for restaurants, offices, homes, or stores where people can see them. This is the last one printed by hand.
Since we have offered this photo in the past decade modern surfing historians have popularized the idea that this was not a 'paipo' board, but an 'Alaia'. There were two main kinds of surfboards in early Hawaiian times: an 'Olo' (a very long board rode by the chiefs and noblemen) and a 'Alaia' (shorter boards rode by the commoners). By definition this could be an 'Alaia' board, and this writer, as a longtime surfer who grew up in Hawaii, and many others were under the conception for years that this was a Paipo board. The case of calling these boards 'Paipo' was a case of common colloquialism error among most island surfers for decades, although we're not sure if there was a definite rule about determining what to call a board that falls between a certain description.
Today Waikiki is the tourism hub of Honolulu and is visited by millions of visitors year round. It is Hawaii's most famous urban coastline and the most crowded stretch of surfing breaks in Hawaii, with beginners, experts, outrigger canoes, swimmers, snorkelers, body boarders, and sun bathers, sharing nearly a 5 mile stretch of beaches. Its spectacular hotels, a myriad of night spots, restaurants, and a wealth of shopping add to its appeal. With brilliantly colored tropical ocean colors, soft white sandy beaches, blue skies, a shoreline lined with coconut palms, exclusive hotels, and Diamond Head (Leahi) crater as a backdrop, it is one of the most photographed and popular travel destinations in the world.
It would make a great birthday or holiday gift for someone who likes old photos of Hawaiiana, or historic images of Hawaii. They are popular reasonably priced decorations for restaurants, offices, homes, or stores where people can see them.
