    Description

    An Original Etching
    Titled
    MALIA
    by
    JOHN KELLY
Signed and Titled in Pencil by the Artist
Offered is an Original Etching, circa: undated but likely from around the mid 1930s to early 1950s when with the formation of the Honolulu Printmakers, there was much focus on printmaking in Hawaii along with the availability of the facility and equipment required for the art. This etching is in near fine condition and has been newly framed in solid Koa.
MALIA was framed with optimum attention to detail by the Picture Frame Shop of Cunningham Gallery in Hilo, Hawaii. The piece is in beautiful condition with full margins; age toning is noted with a bit of slight spotting to occasional areas of the margins but not noted to the plate area.  Photos were obtained prior to framing (as follows) for your referance. Printed on medium stock, no holes or tears were noted and no evidence of adhesives.
The actual sheet measures approximately measures 10 inches by 12 inches, image slightly smaller. It has been matted  in natural-toned silk with a gold filet and beautifully framed in optimum quality 1 inch solid Koa for a completed size of 17 inches by 19 1/2 inches.
Museum quality materials have been utilized throughout, the art has been tipped, not mounted and UV Plexiglass has been employed for ultra-violet/fade protection. The back is closed and a wire hanger is in place making it ready to display.
The young lady in the etching is likely of mixed ethnic background as were the majority of the artist's subjects; perhaps Japanese Hawaiian particularly since the neckline of her garment resembles that of a kimono. MALIA is titled and signed in pencil by the Artist.
John Kelly became well known during the 1930s and 40s for his renderings of Hawaii and Hawaiian individuals. A versatile artist, he is possibly best know for his series of colored Royal Hawaiian Hotel Menu prints  that are today highly prized collector items. Mr. Kelly was a master of the art of printmaking, utilizing techniques such as bitten line, drypoint and aquatint to name a few.  This is one of Mr. Kelly's rare etchings that was not reproduced to satisfy the "mass market" of the 1940s and 50s.
Presenting in sold Koa that itself is nothing short of artwork, this etching is breathtaking. The sober and compelling gaze of the young woman can not help but command the onlooker's attention. Readily to hang and enjoy.
