Oxytetracycline/Terramycin is an antibiotic used in the treatment of American or European foulbrood. Generally treatment is done in spring and fall to prevent or control minor outbreaks of foulbrood disease.
Generally the bees will clean up European foulbrood very readily. American foulbrood is most devastating on the bee brood. This disease is highly contagious and its spores can remain viable indefinitely. If a hive is heavily infected, the best control method is burning of the infected equipment. This will help prevent spread of the disease.
Methods of Use
In syrup — Oxytet can be dissolved in sugar syrup when feeding bees. This method can be effective if bees are using the syrup quickly. However oxytetracycline is unstable in water solution and breaks down quickly. Add 1 litre of hot water to 2 litres of white sugar. Mix to dissolve sugar, then add 1½ teaspoons of the Oxtet-25 or Oxysol 62.5 and mix thoroughly.
Extender patty — Oxytetracycline remains stable for many weeks in extender patties composed of solid vegetable oil, sugar and oxytetracycline. However, the bees do not like the patties and may not consume them, which means they are not getting the appropriate treatment. Therefore, the use of these medicated extender patties is no longer recommended.
Dusting powder — Oxytetracycline remains stable in this form. This method of use gives quick results. The major disadvantage of dusting is that it is difficult to control the drug dosage. Mix 2 tablespoons of icing sugar with 1 teaspoon of Oxytet or Oxysol to treat 1 colony. This medication mixture is then sprinkled (dusted) on the outs

Oxytetracycline hydrochloride – 50 g / 100 g.
Indications:
Oxytetracycline is used in pigs, calves, chickens and turkeys (excluding laying eggs for eggs) in bacterial diseases of the respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract, kidney, bladder, umbilical cord infections caused by organisms susceptible to oxytetracycline. Oxytetracycline is the first-line drug in the treatment of diseases such as Lyme disease and rickettsiasis.
Contraindications:
Do not use in cattle with developed preterophagic function. Do not use in case of hypersensitivity to tetracyclines, and in the case of kidney failure and liver.
Side effects:
Use of the product for a long time may lead to gastrointestinal disturbances and intestinal flora (secondary infections). Oxytetracycline therapy may result in hypersensitivity to light. Hypersensitivity reactions, hepatotoxicity, and hematologic effects occur rarely. Tetracyclines are deposited in deciduous and permanent teeth, causing their discoloration, enamel retardation and poor mineralization. Tetracyclines may inhibit the development of the fetal skeleton. High doses or long-term administration may delay bone growth and healing processes in young animals. Dosage for each species, route (s) and route of administration:
For calves and pigs, the recommended dose is 10–30 mg of oxytetracycline hydrochloride / kg / day for 3–5 days, corresponding to 20–60 mg of the product / kg. The recommended dose should be divided into two parts. For chickens and turkeys, the recommended dose is 10–25 mg oxytetracycline hydrochloride / kg / day for 3–5 days, which is 20–50 mg of the product / kg. The product should be administered in the drinking water. Every day you need to prepare a fresh solution. During treatment, the product solution should be the only source of drinking water for animals. In order to avoid incorrect dosing, the body weight of treated animals should be estimated as accurately as possible. Antibiotic Pour Usage Vétérinaire Seulement Antibiotique OXYTET - 25 ACTIVE INGREDIENT: Oxytetracycline Hydrochloride B.P. 55 mg/g INDICATIONS: As an aid in the prevention and treatment of American Foul Brood and European Foul Brood in bees. DIRECTIONS FOR USE: To reduce the development of antimicrobial resistance and maintain effectiveness, use this antibiotic prudently. AS A DUSTING POWDER: Thoroughly mix 454 g OXYTET - 25 with 3.5 kg of powdered sugar. Apply 32 g of medicated mix per colony on the outer parts or ends of the frames 3 times at 4 to 5 day intervals in the fall and in the spring at least 4 weeks before the main honey flow. IN SUGAR SYRUP: Dissolve 454 g OXYTET - 25 in 300 kg of 1:1 sugar syrup (one part sugar: one part water).
Bulk feed 2.5 kg of this medicated syrup per colony 3 times at 3 to 4 day intervals in the fall and in the spring at least 4 weeks before the main honey flow.
Medicated syrup should be used immediately and consumed within one week. To prevent spreading of the disease, do not use honey from infected colonies for the preparation of medicated syrup. WARNINGS: Honey or syrup stored during the medication period in the combs for surplus honey should be removed following final medication and must not be used for human consumption. Honey from the brood area of colonies treated with this drug must not be extracted for human consumption. When handling the product, avoid inhalation, oral exposure and direct contact with skin or eyes. Keep out of reach of children. STORAGE INSTRUCTIONS: Store below 25˚C.
