Description
This is an authentic and rare antique spiked tomahawk from the Revolutionary War era or earlier. This exact style is pictured in the book titled "Swords & Blades of the American Revolution" by George C. Newmann. This is a beautiful example and most likely was used as a belt axe anywhere from the 1730s-1770s. This could have been used by soldiers, fur traders, trappers, or even Native Americans. The head is in excellent condition with normal pitting. It has a rectangular spike that tapers into a flat blade. It has rounded ears. The overall length of the tomahawk is 14.75" tall. The head is 8" wide. The cutting edge is 1.75". The oval eye socket is approximately 1" x 3/8". The tomahawk weighs 10.5 oz.
I'd say that the handle is most likely original. It is extremely old and has a really neat carved end for grip. The head is slightly loose and wobbles a little bit but will not come off. You can see the original wood wedges that were put into the handle on the top, and then someone eventually added 4 more nails to expand the head more. There is some stamping on the head that I have never been able to figure out. Someone must have stamped their initials "
ROC
" in this just in case it got lost? They stamped it three times on the right side, one time on the left, and one on the very bottom of the wood handle. When you look very close at the stamp, you can see that it is a very old style and also some of the pitting interrupts the letters so I know this stamp was done a very long time ago. It also tells me that the handle has to be very old.
This came out of a great collection in Pennsylvania and you can see some of the other items on my eBay now.
