    Description

    AUTHENTIC
    Revolutionary War Spontoon.
    11 1/2 inches long
    4 1/2 inches wide (crossbar/toggle)
    Deep patina. Shallow pitting covers surface.
    Tip broken/blunted possibly in battle (it is patinated
    along the break).
    A spike was used to affix it to a six-foot pole for horseback and marching.
    Comment: Unusual style, large toggle.
    According to Neumann/Kravik (Collector's Illustrated Encyclopedia,
    page 248) Washington stressed the use of Spntoons by officers as a symbol of rank.
    The crossbar/toggle would have been useful for tying the flag.
