Revolutionary War Grape Shot (4), Mt. Independence VT, ex. Dr. Lord, Bob Oswald

Offered in this 10-Day Auction is a box of four (4) Grape Shot dug in the Mt. Independence, Vermont area.  These dug grape shot were acquired from esteemed Rev War artifacts collector/dealer Robert "Bob" Oswald by Dr. Francis Lord.  The grape shot were ground recovered in the Mt. Independence, Vermont area.  Mt. Independence, on Lake Champlain in Orwell, VT, was the site of extensive fortifications built during the War by the American army to stop a British invasion. Construction began in July 1776, following the American defeat in Canada, and continues through the winter & spring 1777.  After the American retreat on July 5 & 6, 1777, British and Hessian troops occupied Mt. Independence until November 1777.This grape shot is from the collection of the late Dr. Francis Lord.

This dug grape shot is being offered as part of a sale of the collaborative collection of Dr. Francis Lord and Tom Burbage (pictured together w/ item photos).  Dr. Lord bequeathed many of these items upon his passing to his best friend and fellow military antiques enthusiast, Tom Burbage. Over the next year & more, I will be listing these items for sale, primarily as auction listings on ebay.  There are hundreds of items ranging in date from the Revolutionary War thru WWII.  Many of these items are from the personal collections of Dr. Lord and Tom Burbage.  Some are artifacts retain original handwritten price tags and provenance from Dr. Lord's own hand.  Besides being a collector of Civil War items, Dr. Lord published 4 volumes of illustrated Civil War artifact encyclopedias that became the early gold standard for collecting and gave many a young collector, myself included, a start in learning the artifacts "industry".  Dr. Lord’s distinguished career included being head of the US Army’s German speaking POW interrogation unit in WWII. Following WWII, Dr. Lord spent 14years with the CIA as a research analyst concerned with scientific advances in the USSR.
After service to his country, Dr. Lord moved South and settled his family in Lancaster, South Carolina where he was resident Director and Lecturer at the University of South Carolina, Lancaster extension. It is with humble honor that I offer these artifacts for sale on behalf of Dr. Lord and his best friend, Tom Burbage.

I thank him for his help researching and preserving Dr. Lord’s artifacts as I prepare them for sale. Most importantly, I thank him for the start he gave me in appreciating our veterans and collecting military artifacts some 30+ years ago.  Between us, we have over 6,000 positive feedbacks on ebay.
