    Description

Offered in this 7-day auction is a c.1770-1790 Mess Set.  This set contains items that would've been used by the a Colonial soldier everyday, including: 1) a heavy tinned mess bowl/plate, 2) a horn spoon, and 3) an antler handle 2-tine fork.  These are in all in very good condition.  The tin mess plate/bowl is an oblong shape with a tole style wavy line throughout the inside rim.  No hole or cracks.  The spoon is an excellent Georgian style.  The 2-tine fork retains its original antler handle and distal end cap.  The fork is tight to the antler handle (no wobble).  This set comes from a private collection in the Charleston, SC area.  The items make a nice display even though it is unlikely they are original to one another.  Most mess sets were cobbled together from what the soldier brought from home and were rarely a matched set of course.
    Mess Bowl/Plate measures 9 x 7 1/2", 2 1/2" deep
    Fork measures 6 1/4"
    Spoon 6"
