Description
Group of 11 original Rhode Island Militia Revolutionary War pay depreciation payment agreements, plus one additional unknown hand written document.Shortly after the revolutionary war, a committee appointed by the Rhode Island legislature submitted a report stating what additional pay each member of their regiments was entitled to based on depreciation of currency. The report was accepted by the legislature of Rhode Island during the October session of 1785 but no money was ever paid.
Each of the 11 agreements is a transfer of rights to potential entitlements from soldiers to speculators who had hoped that additional money would eventually be given. They are all dated between 1791 and 1793.
The largest in the lot measures 13” tall by 8 1/2” wide. The smallest of the contracts (not including the handwritten) measures 6 3/4” tall by 8 1/4” wide.
Each contract is a partially printed and manuscript, stating the soldiers name, home town, commanding colonel, and terms of transfer of potential award to the speculator purchasing the rights. They are all signed by the soldier and a justice of the peace. Most of them have additional manuscript text on the back as well.
The lot varies greatly in condition. Some are in what I would consider very nice condition with only minor condition issues: some yellowing/tanning, foxing, folds, chipping to the edges, etc. Most have rips along fold lines, tears, holes, stains/water damage, and other major factors. Some tape on a couple. Please see pictures. I’m not sure how these came to be in Oregon.
They are all guaranteed original 18th century documents.
