pottery pieces are very sought after, but it can be difficult to identify the real thing. Shawnee pottery originated in 1937 in Zanesville, Ohio, when
“Buy American”
campaigns were popular. Shawnee designed a popular line of dinnerware items, cookie jars, planters, creamers and salt and pepper shakers.  In 1961, the Shawnee Pottery Company closed its doors due to overseas competition.   Shawnee pieces may be marked

SHAWNEE
Pottery began producing fanciful wares in 1937 with A.E. Hull Jr., son of The Hull Pottery Company's owner, managing the business in Zanesville, Ohio.  Most Shawnee Pottery items left the factory with only paper labels to denote their origin. However, many Shawnee pieces do have "USA" marks incised in the bottoms even if the paper labels have been removed.

The vase is of beautiful and well-proportioned form.  Its design, suggesting it is from the 1940s, is traditional, even classical, in some respects, but also definitely suggests
"Art Moderne"
or
"Art Deco"
or
"Mid-Century Modern"
design elements.
This piece measures 6 1/8" tall (at the top of the rim scallop on one side).  It is very slightly shorter, 6" on the opposite side.  It is about 4.5" wide on the body, below the handles.  The top rim measures 4.5" x 3.75" across.
I acquired this piece in the early 1970s, when I began a McCoy/Shawnee collection.  It has been on display or boxed since then--the last almost 50 years.  Now, it's one of the many victims of our necessary down-sizing.
Condition:
I am detailing the following minor defects for 100% accuracy--about a piece that is in excellent,
undamaged
condition.
Exterior:
There are 3 small, original manufacturing flaws on the exterior.  Just at the bottom of one handle, there is a small, shallow "dip" in the surface, undoubtedly from original manufacture (Photo #4).  Also at the bottom (to the right) of that same handle, there is a pinpoint sized point of dropped glaze, which may have originated as a bubble (Photo #3).  On the other side, under the glazed finish, about .5" down from the top rim, there is a small fuzzy greenish spot (as if some green glaze got on the piece by accident, before it was fired) about 1/16." (Photo #8).
Interior:
There is one additional glaze bubble inside the vase, about 1.5" down from the top of the rim. (Photo #7--you might see the bubble if you enlarge the photo.)
Other than these original manufacture flaws, which add to the hand-made look of pieces like this,
there is absolutely no damage from use
.  No cracks, chips, flea bites, or crazing.  The glaze is bright.  The inside is clean.  The unfinished bottom rim has some of the usual shelf-wear scuff marks.
There is a lot of camera flash.
