    Description

This silk parasol in the original box was passed down through my family for generations. As far as I can tell, it is NYC circa early 1900s based on the original box labeled Saks-Herald Square at 34th Street and Broadway. My research found that store construction at this location was underway in 1901, chosen in part, because of its proximity to the Sixth Avenue elevated train and rumored Penn Station. The parasol ribs, stretcher and tips are metal. The pole, ferrule and handle are wood. The fabric is very fragile and has detached at one rib end with a substantial tear. Fear of further/additional tears in the fabric prevents the parasol from being fully opened although the top and bottom springs are functional. There are no markings on the parasol itself. The box is also fragile and shows old tape repair work.
