This is a quality shrinkwrapped giclee print,
mounted on a single 8x10 inch backing mat **which is included as part of the print (see photo)
, from an original black & white photograph from the early 1900's that was hand colored, the print is shrink wrapped (you may be able to see it in the photo) with caption, Waikiki history, and photography information on the back of Diamond Head with surfers at Waikiki Beach, the hand colored photo original was probably after 1920?? Please note: it is grainy with a faux linen-like texture and it was copied on Velvia transparency film. When enlarged it will look slightly grainier and  the print looks textured, and is a nice historic and artistic photo. Please be aware of this. Our Prices are less than you would pay retail at a gallery and production costs are lower than most folks so we want to offer affordable quality art for people who might not otherwise be able to afford it. It is Hawaii's most famous urban coastline and the most crowded stretch of surfing breaks in Hawaii, with beginners, experts, outrigger canoes, swimmers, snorkelers, body boarders, and sun bathers, sharing nearly a 5 mile stretch of beaches. Its spectacular hotels, a myriad of night spots, restaurants, and a wealth of shopping add to its appeal. With brilliantly colored tropical ocean colors, soft white sandy beaches, blue skies, a shoreline lined with coconut palms, exclusive hotels, and Diamond Head (Leahi) crater as a backdrop, it is one of the most photographed and popular travel destinations in the world.
The ancient and very spiritual sport of surfing started in Hawaii and there are indications that it may be more than several hundred years old. There are many old stories about ancient Hawaiian royalty and commoners surfing longer than Hawaiian history records. Captain Cooke in the 1700's mentioned surfing in his logs. The original surfboards were basically heavy, flat, wooden planks, 6-16+ feet in length, 5-10 inches in thickness, that were hand carved from logs and treated with oils and varnishes to make them waterproof. They were bulky and awkward to ride compared to modern boards. There were two kinds of surfboards in early Hawaiian times, an 'Olo' ( the longer heavy boards mostly rode by the chiefs and noblemen) and a 'Alaia' (the shorter boards rode by the commoners). In ancient times most of the better surf breaks were reserved for royalty. To be an accomplished surfer was a goal of many Alii and royalty which gained them more recognition and status in the society. Its likely that commoners who were excellent surfers were allowed to surf with royalty and gained a higher position in the society.
