Waimea Bay and beach are also a world famous landmark and its giant wintertime waves are some of the most powerful on earth, generated by far distant North Pacific Ocean storms during the winter months (Sept-March). They are an incredible example of the ocean's mightiness. It is also home of the Eddie Aikau Memorial big wave surfing contest held only when the waves are at least 25 feet high. Native Hawaiians, surfers, and a lot of oriental people consider these magnificent waves to be a supreme example of power and manifested with the spirit of mother nature. To actually see these massive wintertime waves at the point being ridden by surfers and breaking along the shoreline is an awesome, humbling, and unforgettable experience. In the summer time when it is usually calm it is one of the most beautiful and pristine beaches on Oahu for sunbathing, and swimming.
